Choosing the Right Flail Mower
A flail mower cuts with dozens of small, free-swinging blades (flails) mounted on a rotating drum, shredding grass, brush, and light saplings into fine mulch. Unlike a rotary cutter, it leaves a clean, even finish and is far safer around people and property, since the flails retract on impact instead of throwing debris. That makes it the preferred tool for roadsides, ditches, trails, orchards, and overgrown land.
The right choice depends on mounting and power. PTO flail mowers attach to a tractor's three-point hitch and run off the PTO, offset and ditch-bank models tilt to cut banks and verges, and skid steer units mount to a loader. Match the cutting width and duty rating to your tractor or skid steer horsepower and the toughness of what you cut.
Flail Mower vs. Rotary Cutter
A rotary cutter (brush hog) uses a couple of large blades and is great for fast, rough clearing of heavy brush. A flail mower uses many small blades for a finer, more even cut with less thrown debris, making it safer near buildings, roads, and people. Choose a flail for finish quality and safety, or a rotary cutter for the heaviest rough clearing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What tractor do I need for a PTO flail mower?
You need a tractor with a three-point hitch and rear PTO, with horsepower in the mower's listed range. Wider and heavier-duty flail mowers require more horsepower. Each product lists its recommended tractor HP and hitch category, so match those to your machine before buying.
What is an offset or ditch-bank flail mower?
An offset flail mower shifts to the side of the tractor and can tilt up or down, letting you cut ditch banks, slopes, and verges you couldn't reach with a centered mower. It's ideal for roadside maintenance, drainage ditches, and property edges. Tilt range and offset vary by model.
Can flail mowers cut small saplings and brush?
Yes. Flail mowers handle tall grass, weeds, and light brush, and heavier-duty models can take on small saplings up to their rated capacity. For the toughest woody growth, choose a heavy-duty flail mower matched to a higher-horsepower tractor. Check each model's rated material capacity.
Do you offer skid steer and self-powered flail mowers?
Along with tractor PTO models, we carry skid steer flail mowers, walk-behind self-propelled units, and tow-behind ATV models, so you can match the mower to whatever equipment you run. Check each product's mounting and power details to be sure it fits your setup.
