About Mortar Mixers

A mortar mixer works on a completely different principle from a concrete mixer. The drum stays stationary while paddles rotate through the material on a horizontal shaft, shearing and folding it rather than tumbling it. That shearing action is what breaks up lime and cement properly and produces the smooth, lump-free consistency that mortar, stucco, and grout require.

Poly Drum Mortar Mixers

Poly drums will not rust and release cured material more readily, which makes end-of-day cleanup meaningfully faster. For mortar work that is a real advantage, because mortar left to set in a drum is far harder to deal with than concrete. We carry poly drum models in 6 and 8 cubic foot capacities on Honda GX240 engines.

Steel Drum Mortar Mixers

Steel drums handle abrasive mixes and heavy daily production better and tolerate rougher site treatment. If the mixer runs continuously on commercial masonry work, steel is the more durable long-term choice. Also available in 6 and 8 cubic foot capacities.

What Goes in a Mortar Mixer

Mortar for block and brick laying, stucco and render, tile grout, plaster, and thinset. Anything without large stone aggregate that needs a smooth, uniform consistency belongs in a mortar mixer. Concrete with stone aggregate does not, and should go in a concrete mixer instead.

Choosing a Mortar Mixer

Size the drum to what your crew can actually place before the mix starts setting, not to the biggest batch the machine can hold, since mortar has a limited working time once mixed. A 6 cubic foot drum suits smaller crews and repair work; 8 cubic feet suits sustained production with multiple masons.
