About Rock Buckets

A rock bucket looks like an ordinary bucket with the floor removed and replaced by spaced tines, and that one change is the whole point. Soil, sand, and fines fall through the gaps while rock, roots, brush, and debris stay in the bucket. You end up separating material in a single pass instead of scooping up the ground along with everything you actually wanted to remove.

What You Will Use One For

Rock buckets are a land clearing and cleanup tool first. Typical work includes picking rock out of fields and future lawns, sifting debris from a building site, cleaning up after excavation or demolition, collecting roots and stumps during clearing, grading and screening driveway material, and pulling brush and storm debris off pasture.

Tine Spacing

Tine spacing is the specification that matters most, because it decides what falls through and what you keep. Narrower spacing retains smaller stone and more debris but also holds more soil, which means you carry more weight and leave more dirt on the pile. Wider spacing sheds soil cleanly and moves faster but lets smaller material drop straight back to the ground. Match the spacing to the smallest thing you actually need to remove.

Light Duty Versus Heavy Duty

Light duty rock buckets are built for sub compact and compact tractors and for lighter, occasional picking. Heavy duty models use thicker steel and heavier tines for continuous work, larger rock, and higher horsepower machines. Running a light duty bucket on a machine that can overload it is how tines get bent, so match the rating to the loader rather than to the price.

Sizing and Capacity

Width should be at least as wide as your tires or tracks so you are not driving over material you have not picked up. Past that, wider covers ground faster but adds weight at the end of the loader arms and reduces what the machine can safely lift. Check your loader's rated operating capacity and count the bucket's own weight against it, remembering that a bucket full of rock is far heavier than the same volume of loose soil.

Mounting, Grapple Lids, and Construction

Most rock buckets use a universal quick attach mounting plate, the standard interface on skid steers and compact track loaders, also available on many compact tractor loaders. Confirm your mount before ordering if your machine uses something else. Some rock buckets add a hydraulic grapple lid on top, which lets you clamp brush and logs rather than only carrying what sits in the tines, and those models need auxiliary hydraulics at the loader arms. On construction, look at tine thickness and how the tines tie into the frame, plus whether side plates and the back are reinforced. Each listing states tine spacing, width, and duty rating.
