About Pegboard Cabinets

Most tool storage problems are really visibility problems. Tools in drawers and bins get buried, and the time lost is not one long search but a hundred short ones spread across a week. Pegboard fixes that by giving every tool a fixed, visible home. Putting the pegboard inside a cabinet keeps that visibility while adding shelves for everything that does not hang and a door that locks when the shift ends.

Pegboard Cabinet or Open Wall Pegboard

Open wall pegboard is cheap and it works, but it has three limits. It cannot be locked, so anything hanging on it can walk. It offers no shelf space, so boxed parts and bulk stock still need somewhere else to go. And it is fixed to one wall, so it cannot follow the work or move when you rearrange the shop. A pegboard cabinet solves all three. It is the right call in a shared shop, a school or training bay, a maintenance department where several people draw from the same tools, or anywhere the tools are worth more than the cabinet.

Shadow Boarding and Tool Accountability

Pegboard is the standard surface for shadow boarding, where each tool gets an outlined position so a missing tool is obvious from across the room instead of being discovered at the end of a job. That matters most where a tool left behind is a real problem: aircraft and vehicle maintenance, food and pharmaceutical plants, and any lockout or confined space work. It is also the simplest way to make a 5S program stick, because the board enforces itself. A cabinet mounted board keeps that discipline and adds the option of closing and locking it between shifts.

Sizes and Configurations We Stock

Our Durham pegboard cabinets are 24 inches deep and come in two widths, 48 inches and 60 inches. The 78 inch tall models are 12 gauge steel and are available with 3 or 4 adjustable shelves, and the 60 inch wide version gives you the most hanging area of anything here. The 72 inch tall model is 14 gauge steel with 2 shelves, which leaves more open interior height and suits longer hanging tools. Fewer shelves means more room for what hangs, more shelves means more room for what stacks.

Choosing a Pegboard Cabinet

Start by splitting your inventory into what hangs and what stacks. If most of it is wrenches, pliers, drivers, and hand tools, favor fewer shelves and more panel area. If you are storing as much boxed stock and bulk supply as you are tools, go with the 4 shelf configuration. Then check your ceiling and door clearance against the 78 inch height before ordering, and measure the wall run so a 60 inch wide cabinet actually fits where you intend to put it.
