About Soil Conditioners and Power Rakes

A soil conditioner, also sold as a power rake or harley rake, is a powered drum attachment that works the top few inches of ground. The drum rotates, breaking up compacted soil and clods, pulling rock and debris to the surface, and windrowing it off to the side while leaving behind a level, loose, seed ready surface. It does grading, tilling, and rock removal in the same pass, which is why it is the standard finishing tool for landscape contractors.

What You Will Use One For

The typical jobs are new lawn preparation, renovating an existing lawn, leveling and prepping athletic fields, smoothing driveways and paths, cleaning up rutted or compacted ground after construction traffic, and pulling rock and debris out of a site before seeding or laying sod.

Manual Angle Versus Hydraulic Angle

Angle is the main configuration choice. A manual angle model is set by pin before you start, which is fine when you are working long straight passes in one direction and want the simpler, less expensive machine. A hydraulic angle model lets the operator change the angle from the cab while working, which matters when you are constantly switching direction, working around obstacles, or windrowing to a different side on each pass. On a large open field the difference is small. On a tight residential lot with a lot of back and forth, hydraulic angle saves real time.

Landplanes

A landplane is a related but simpler tool. It has no powered drum and instead uses fixed cutting blades in a rigid frame to shear high spots and fill low spots as it is dragged. Landplanes are excellent for maintaining gravel driveways, arenas, and lanes, and for rough leveling before finish work. They need no hydraulics and cost less, but they will not till, pulverize, or separate rock the way a powered conditioner does.

Hydraulic Flow Requirements

Every powered soil conditioner requires auxiliary hydraulics at the loader arms to drive the drum, and flow requirement is the specification to check before you buy. Confirm your machine's auxiliary flow rating and whether it is standard flow or high flow, then confirm the attachment is rated for what your machine actually delivers. Too little flow means the drum stalls in heavy material.

Sizing and Mounting

Width should be at least as wide as your tires or tracks so the drum works the ground your machine just drove over, otherwise you leave compacted wheel tracks behind on every pass. Beyond that, wider covers more ground per pass but weighs more and demands more from the machine. Most of these attachments use a universal quick attach mounting plate, the standard skid steer and compact track loader interface.
