About Ventilated Storage Cabinets

Every steel cabinet is a sealed box unless someone designs it not to be. Most of the time sealed is what you want. But some contents keep releasing vapor after you shut the door, and some go in damp and need to dry. In both cases a solid door works against you, because the air inside never changes. Ventilated cabinets replace the door panels with louvers so the interior stays in contact with room air, and they still take a padlock, so you get airflow without giving up control of who opens it.

Why Ventilation Matters

Two separate problems get solved by the same louvers. The first is off-gassing: cleaning chemicals, solvents in partly used containers, adhesives, and aerosols continue to release vapor in storage, and in a sealed cabinet that vapor builds up until you get a face full of it on opening. The second is moisture. Hoses, harnesses, wet weather gear, mop heads, respirators, and washed parts all carry water in with them. Sealed up, that water condenses on cold steel and stays there, which is how you get surface rust on tools and mildew on fabric. Moving air handles both.

Ventilated Is Not the Same as a Flammable Safety Cabinet

These are two different products and they are not interchangeable. A flammable storage cabinet is a double wall, self closing, fire rated enclosure built to hold flammable liquids under fire code, and its vents stay plugged unless it is mechanically ducted. A ventilated cabinet is a standard single wall steel cabinet with louvered doors, meant for general storage that needs airflow. If you are storing flammable liquids and a fire inspector will look at it, you need our flammable storage cabinets, not one of these.

Sizes and Configurations We Stock

Our 12-gauge ventilated cabinets are 24 inches deep and 78 inches tall in 36, 48, and 60 inch widths, all with 4 adjustable shelves and shelf capacities of 1,900, 1,200, and 1,650 pounds respectively. The 14-gauge line covers narrower and shorter footprints, including 36 by 18 inch models at 60, 72, and 84 inches tall, plus 36 by 24 by 84 and 48 by 24 by 72 configurations with 3 or 4 shelves. All use a recessed ventilated door with a cast iron handle and are pad-lockable.

Choosing a Ventilated Cabinet

Start with height, since ceiling height, sprinkler heads, and overhead conduit usually decide it for you. Then pick depth: 18 inches keeps the cabinet tight to a wall in a corridor, 24 inches takes larger containers and totes. Shelf count follows the size of what you are storing, and if your loads are heavy, compare the stated per shelf ratings rather than assuming. Every listing gives gauge, dimensions, shelf count, and shelf capacity.
