Self-Dumping Hoppers

A self-dumping hopper collects scrap, chips, trim, and general waste at the machine, then empties itself into a dumpster without anyone climbing, tipping, or shovelling. The forklift picks it up by the fork pockets, carries it to the container, and the hopper releases and rolls forward to discharge. One operator handles the whole cycle from the seat, and the hopper returns upright on its own.

We carry Vestil self-dumping hoppers from 1.5 up to 5 cubic yards, all rated at 6,000 lb and built from 8-gauge steel. You can choose the standard bump and dump release, a no bump and dump version where the release is controlled rather than triggered by contact with the dumpster, or a hydraulic model that dumps from the forklift hydraulics. Sizes are stocked in a range of powder coat colors plus galvanized. Pick the volume that matches how often you want to empty it, then choose the release style that suits how your drivers work.

About Self-Dumping Hoppers

Scrap handling is where a lot of shop labor quietly disappears. Someone fills a barrel, someone else wrestles it onto a cart, and eventually two people tip it into a dumpster. A self-dumping hopper replaces that whole sequence. It sits where the scrap is made, the forklift collects it, and it discharges at the container without a person touching the load. The hopper then latches upright again ready to go back.

Standard Bump and Dump Hoppers

The standard self-dumping hopper releases when the front of the hopper contacts the edge of the dumpster, which tips the body forward and discharges the load. It is the simplest mechanism, there is nothing to plumb or wire, and it works with any forklift that can reach the container. This is the right choice for most scrap, chip, and general waste applications.

No Bump and Dump Hoppers

The no bump and dump models remove the contact trigger, so the hopper only releases when the operator releases it. That is worth having where the hopper is dumped into something you would rather not hit, where an accidental contact release would create a mess or a hazard, or where the load is heavy enough that you want the discharge deliberate rather than automatic.

Hydraulic Self-Dumping Hoppers

Hydraulic hoppers connect to the forklift auxiliary hydraulics and dump on command from the operator seat. Because the tilt is powered and controlled, the operator can meter the discharge instead of releasing it all at once, and there is no need to line the hopper up against the dumpster edge. We carry hydraulic self-dumping hoppers at 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 cubic yards.

Sizing and Finish

Volumes run 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, and 5 cubic yards, and every hopper here is rated at 6,000 lb in 8-gauge steel. Size on how often you are willing to empty it rather than on weight, since most shop scrap fills the volume long before it reaches the weight limit. Dense material such as steel offcuts is the exception and should be checked against the rating. Hoppers are stocked in several powder coat colors, which is useful if you want to sort waste streams by color, and in galvanized for outdoor or wet service.
