About Snow Pushers, Blades and Buckets

Snow work rewards picking the right tool for the surface and the volume. The three main attachment styles here all move snow, but they do it differently, and using the wrong one costs you time on every pass.

Snow Pushers

A snow pusher is a box, closed on both ends, that carries snow ahead of the machine instead of rolling it off to the side. Because nothing escapes the ends, you move a full load the entire length of the pass, which makes pushers the most productive choice on open ground: parking lots, large driveways, equipment yards, and pads. They work best pushing snow in straight lines to a single stacking area.

Snow Blades

A snow blade angles left or right and casts snow off to the side as you drive. That windrowing action is what you want on long driveways, roads, and lanes where you want the snow thrown clear of the travel path rather than accumulated in front of you. Blades are also more forgiving in tight or irregular spaces where a fixed width box is awkward.

Snow Buckets

A snow bucket is a high volume, lightweight bucket sized for a low density material. It is the right choice when you need to pick snow up, load it into a truck, or relocate a pile rather than push it. Many operators run a pusher or blade for clearing and keep a snow bucket for stacking and hauling.

Sizing to Machine and Site

Attachment width should meet or exceed the width of your tires or tracks so you are not driving through what you just failed to clear, but a pusher or blade much wider than the machine gets unwieldy in tight lots and adds weight out at the end of the loader arms. Check your loader's rated operating capacity and account for the attachment's own weight. Also measure the narrowest gate, alley, or turnaround you have to work through, because that dimension sets your practical maximum.

Mounting and Hydraulics

Most of these attachments use a universal quick attach mounting plate, the standard interface on skid steers and compact track loaders and available on many compact tractor loaders. Hydraulic angle blades additionally require auxiliary hydraulics at the loader arms, so confirm your machine is plumbed for it. Manual angle models set the angle by pin and need no hydraulics.

Wear Edges

Look at the wear edge material and whether it is replaceable, since that is the part that consumes itself. Rubber and polyurethane edges are gentler on finished surfaces like pavers and sealed asphalt, while steel edges scrape harder surfaces more aggressively. Shoes or skids that set the cutting height protect both the edge and the surface underneath. Each listing states width, edge type, and mounting details.
